Most Memeable Moment of Super Bowl LV? The Weeknd’s Halftime Show Performance
Updated: Feb 15, 2021

This year the NFL, Pepsi, & now Rocnation Halftime show was headlined by Starboy himself, Abel The Weeknd Tesfaye. The performance featured a masked (and relatively social distant) choral and orchestral sections as well as dancers. The fact that this show happened during a pandemic seemed to play right into the costume theme. When Variety spoke with the three time Grammy winner between rehearsals for his Super Bowl performance he stated, "The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated”. The red jackets, gloves, and facial injuries are all part of who The Weeknd named "The Character," the persona featured within his critically-lauded "After Hours" album he released in March 2020.
During the performance of “I Can’t Feel My Face” The Weeknd and dancers can be seen stumbling through a long, narrow, cubed shaped hallway. Hallway walls and ceiling had a mirrored appearance with rows of lights you’d see at a carnival. The scene quickly inspired a storm of hilarious memes. These were some of my favorites:
Long time followers of the Canadian sensation were overjoyed to see The Weeknd go from homelessness to Halftime. Abel fans were elated to see House of Balloons be preformed. It was the title track from his first mixtape he dropped in 2011 that later was released in 2012 as part of the Trilogy album which featured all three mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echos of Silence.
The Weeknd also expressed the honor he felt about performing during the Halftime show of the most watched sporting event in the world.
I think the only thing better than looking at funny Abel memes could be Drake from State Farm. *Drool*
